BlackBox ECU Simulator

BlackBox ECU Simulator is an engine tuning simulator focused on how real ECUs behave under load, not simplified or arcade-style tuning.

You work directly with RPM vs load tables, ignition timing, fuel targets, and dyno feedback. Changes are evaluated through power, torque, AFR, EGT, and knock response. If a tune works, it’s because the underlying logic supports it — not because the game is helping you.

The goal is to build intuition around why engines respond the way they do when you change timing, fuel, and boost.

What You Do

  • Edit ignition and fuel maps using standard RPM × MAP tables

  • Perform controlled dyno pulls and evaluate results

  • Adjust multiple cells at once and smooth surfaces using interpolation

  • Identify knock-limited and flow-limited operating regions

  • Tune for power while managing thermal and mechanical limits

There are no preset “correct” answers. The engine responds based on the calibration.

What It Tries to Model

  • Turbo engines that stop responding to boost at high RPM

  • Timing sensitivity near peak torque

  • AFR effects on power and exhaust temperature

  • The difference between fixing a single cell and shaping a surface

  • Why aggressive tuning often works briefly and then fails

It’s not a full physics model, but it behaves consistently enough to reward correct reasoning and expose bad habits.

Intended Audience

  • People learning engine calibration

  • Motorsports or mechanical engineering students

  • Tuners who want a safe way to experiment

  • Anyone curious about why “more boost” stops working

No prior tuning experience is required, but the simulator assumes you’re willing to think.

Technical Notes

  • Runs fully offline

  • No network access or external services

  • Browser-based HTML application

  • Keyboard and mouse input

Project Status

This is an active project. Core systems are in place, with additional challenges and refinements planned. Feedback focused on engine behavior and calibration logic is welcome.

This is awesome! Excited to see how this continues evolving and hopefully gets engine noise soon! Using it to learn how to tune better before working on my IRL project car!

soon enough, I’ll keep pushing it forward. I surprisingly got a lot of support on it

Do you have a discord or any other way we can follow along as you progress?

Just my tik tok @blackflagworks and insta is beams_s13.5

I do have a discord but it’s just for playing battlefield lol
